The fujara is a unique overtone flute with three finger-holes. It is one of the largest flutes in the world. Nowadays the most commonly used fujaras are in the key of G and these are 170 cm long. The fujara has an additional pipe which serves as a mechanical tube for leading the air up to the fipple and allows musician to cover the finger-holes.
The fujara was traditionally used by shepherds, and its repertoire consists of calm, meditative songs. Fujara songs are often sad, they tell stories of everyday life and capture moods resulting from the loneliness of life in the bosom of the Slovakian Carpathian mountains.
Today, the fujara is popular with musicians playing various styles of music for its warm and rich sound and exceptional possibilities for the use of overtones.
